david J. Woodbury - assistant ProfessorI am an applied forest ecologist that focuses on answering both theoretical and applied questions related to forest restoration and managing forest ecosystems that are resilient to change. Presently, I am an Assistant Professor at New Mexico Highlands University where I teach classes about forest ecology and management and research how forests respond to disturbances. My research spans temperate and tropical ecosystems, including current work on forest dynamics in fragmented rainforests in Sri Lanka and White Oak response to uneven-aged management in the Missouri Ozarks. I use a variety of techniques to do this work including dendrochronology, remote sensing, field-based forest inventory plots, and social surveys to ask how past land use and current human values influence forest development. In my past work, I led research projects on forest gap dynamics in a northeastern oak-hickory forest in Connecticut and on an abandoned surface coal mine reforestation site in Indonesian Borneo. Additionally, I contributed to studies on intact rainforests in Sri Lanka, tropical tree planting programs, and temperate ginseng forest farming. I design my research to directly inform strategies for establishing resilient forests in a rapidly changing world, focusing on sustainable forest management that not only enhances ecosystem resilience but also improves people's lives. |
